Goodenough college london wedding | RACHEL & FRED

CANDID WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Rachel and Freds wedding at Goodenough college was a joyful celebration in the middle of London’s fashionable Bloomsbury. Normally based in Nairobi, the couple were returning to London to get married and I was really looking forward to a day of colour, culture and a fusion of Kenyan and English wedding traditions. It didn’t disappoint plus I got to photograph one of the proudest grooms I have ever seen, standing at the alter in one of Islingtons finest churches. I had met Rachel and Fred for an engagement shoot earlier in the summer and we’d strolled around the Highbury fields where Rachel had grown up and we joked about how often Goodenough would feature in the speech punchlines. The last laugh was on me when Fred revealed his father, who was a very accomplished photographer, had given Fred the  middle name ‘Leica’ -  after his favourite camera  ..no pressure then!

On the day, I went straight to the very beautiful St. Mary’s church where Fred’s immediate family had travelled from Kenya bringing a burst of vibrancy with traditional dress, flowers and hair beading.  Following the ceremony, we all took a Routemaster and headed to the Goodenough college where the guests mingled and a jazz band played in the background. Rachel and Fred didn’t want to pose for many portraits but there was plenty to photograph candidly - between the love they had for each other and the pride so evident in their parents faces and guests and it was a pleasure to be a part of it.

Shanay and Ryan’s wedding at Glenmore House in Surrey was a fun filled, high spirited, dance fuelled, Caribbean/ Cockney knees-up that just got more boisterous as the hours passed .. so I stayed late!

I met Shanay for a pint a couple of days before her Glenmore house wedding so we could both break through the ‘stranger -danger’ nerves and I came away thinking I was about to shoot a good friends wedding. She made no secret of the fact that both she and Ryan were allergic to having their photographs taken and Malachai their little four year old was equally as camera shy. Shanay wanted me to mingle and avoid anything too organised with little in the way of group shots or getting ready pictures - essentially candid wedding photography.

On the day my camera certainly loved her little man but I had to pull Ryan out of a store cupboard where he and his best man were trying to put their glad rags on in darkness! A quick service, a sneaky portrait by some stained glass windows and then it was off to the bar area where this gathering of families and friends really started to warm up. Glenmore House boasts a Ballroom and a ‘sprung dance floor’ and this is one wedding party that didn’t need any extra bounce!

I’m going to steal a line that sums this night up ‘If this song is not played at your wedding, y’all ain’t really married’ Cameo’s candy… it got played twice and I could watch it a million times! Shanay and Ryan ..a wedding day like yours makes my working day feel like a seven day weekend. Thankyou xx

A Same-sex Islington wedding | Rhi& Rossi

For me, there’s something extra special about a same-sex Islington wedding. There’s always a back story, an initial hint of shyness and that off the scale emotional outpouring that follows signing your civil partnership into law. With Rhi and Rossi there was also the added grandeaur of the  Islington Town-Hall’s listed building architecture, the proximity of Upper street and a jet- lagged Dad turning up unannounced a couple of days before your wedding with a packet of Tim-Tams.

Rhi met Rossi at a dinner party in London and as she said herself - it felt like the universe was throwing her a huge curved ball. She’d not long landed in the U.K. from Australia and was intent on finishing her Intensive Care medical training and hitting every surf beach in Europe. Being completely bowled over and finding “wife material” had not been part of the grand plan! By the time their wedding  in Islington’s Town Hall had come about Rossi was turning her own world upside down and  making plans to up sticks and head to Sydney. As such, their wedding was also a farewell party and their wish to have some informal portraits through the streets of Angel and their favourite cocktail bar would act as a reminder of their old stomping ground when back in Australia. Here’s a few of my favourites and a couple of lines from Rhi’s genius wedding speech.

“You deal in stories, pursue and collect them. I deal in bodies, examine, correct them. I am pragmatic, you make things pretty. I do broad brush strokes, you do nitty-gritty. I know how to talk, you know how to feel. I play by the book, you blag a deal”

CARTON HOUSE WEDDING| KAREN AND MAURICE

CANDID WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

A Carton House weddng is a guarantee for glitz and glamour at the best of times  but when you  add in the magic of a New Years Eve celebration you really are all dressed up with somewhere to go. Karen and her ‘wing-woman’ four year old Clodagh, who developed a love-hate relationship with hair curlers and hairspray on the day, got ready in the old building of Carton House and then had the cutest ‘first -reveal’ with Dad and Husband -to-be, Maurice. Winter weddings provide a narrow window for  couple and family portraits so chosing to have a first reveal not only results in gorgeous intimate moments but takes the pressure off trying to organise group shots in fading light. It also keeps you with your guests while the champagne is being shared! With this in mind Karen and Maurice pulled on the welly boots, jumped into golf buggies and headed down to the off-limits and very beautiful Shell Cottage - whilst I said Novenas for Karen’s dress. Normally behind lock and key this unique spot was once visited by Queen Victoria and was home to the singer Marianne Faithful in the 90’s . The room for which it is named, was decorated in the 1700’s with mother of pearl and shells from across the world and the resulting portraits were a personal highlight to this Carton House wedding. Following this the miraculously immaculate pair headed back to the house, got married, partied hard, welcomed in the new year …..and set off the smoke alarms with a few too many smoke-grenades! Thank-you Karen, Maurice and Clodagh, your Carton House wedding will always be one of my all time favourite weddings!

Wild Atlantic Way Kerry Wedding

Candid  wedding photography

Aibhilin and Marc’s Wild Atlantic Way Kerry wedding hosts a thirsty bunch of Londoners with a backdrop of St. Patricks day and an Ireland versus England Rugby Grand Slam show down!

Irish weddings require stamina. It’s not just the day itself, it’s the night before and the ‘settler’ the evening after but in Aibhilin and Marc’s case, they decided to throw in St. Patricks weekend for good measure. Paddys day falls in the middle of Lent where officially, unofficially as an Irish person, you’re given special dispensation to go back on the chocolate and the drink. It’s also the tail-end of the Cheltenham festival and this year there was the small matter of a Rugby 6 Nations Irish grand slam to win…we just had to beat the English! The Ryan Air flight full of Cockney rebels from Luton was about to land into a country primed for meltdown.

Irish wedding mornings generally start the same way. There’s the ‘I wouldn’t touch a black pudding with a barge pole’ conversation, somebody will try and bribe the weather with the Child of Prague and somebody else will suggest knocking it’s head off because a decapitated holy statue in Ireland is more likely to part the rain clouds! It’s also worth adding a few extra minutes onto your fashionably late timeline as invariably a tractor will be taking the same route as you to the Alter. Failing that you’ll definitely be photobombed by one.

Aibhilin grew up in a village called Moyvane, along the Wild Atlantic Way  in Co. Kerry. The kingdom of Ireland.  In her own words it’s small - with a shop, butcher, chipper, post office and four pubs. Marc is a little more exotic with a Maltese father and a Scottish mother. They both met, initially with conflicting opinions of each other (!) somewhere on route between the Claddagh and the Quays in North London - a rite of passage for every late night thirsty Irish reveller. Fast forward a few years and a proposal on the Cliffs of Moher - almost upstaged by another genuflecting amorous American - and here we were in Speedy’s throwing shapes and throwing darts and drinking pints. A quick call into St Johns Church in Tralee provided the perfect portrait opportunity in the company of two life sized marble Angels. Then it was off to Dotts Bar in the Rose Hotel for some Sopranos style posturing and just enough time for the double act of Best men to warm up and rampage their way through the speeches. The rest of the night needs no explanation ..dance floor…cocktails ..Berocca before bed and then up and at it again  for day two!

….And then the next day this happened!

If you are having a Wild Atlantic Way Kerry wedding and want a photographer that shoots candidly  and naturally then please get in touch to check my availability. Whilst you’re here have a look at a wedding from the East coast of Ireland in County Kildare’s Carton House.
